What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It’s often caused by compression or irritation of the nerve due to conditions like a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle tightness (e.g., piriformis syndrome). Common symptoms include sharp pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the leg.

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

Chiropractic treatment aims to alleviate sciatica by addressing misalignments or issues in the spine that may be compressing the sciatic nerve. Chiropractors use techniques such as:

  • Spinal Adjustments: These are gentle manipulations to realign the vertebrae and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Traction: Stretching techniques to reduce pressure on the spinal discs.
  • Soft Tissue Therapy: Techniques like massage or trigger point therapy to relieve muscle tightness or inflammation.

By improving spinal alignment, chiropractic care can reduce pain, improve mobility, and help prevent future sciatic issues.

Physiotherapy for Sciatica

Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening the muscles, improving flexibility, and correcting posture to relieve sciatic nerve pressure. Key physiotherapy techniques include:

  • Stretching Exercises: These target the hamstrings, piriformis, and lower back muscles to ease tension.
  • Strengthening Exercises: Core and leg muscle exercises to support the spine and prevent further injury.
  • Posture Correction: Teaching proper body mechanics and ergonomics to reduce strain on the lower back.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to mobilise stiff joints and relax tense muscles.

Physiotherapy provides long-term relief by promoting healing, improving mobility, and preventing recurrence through exercise and posture correction.

Combined Approach

Both chiropractic care and physiotherapy can complement each other in treating sciatica. Chiropractic addresses spinal alignment and nerve compression, while physiotherapy strengthens the muscles and improves overall function. Together, they offer a holistic approach to managing and preventing sciatica.
