Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and balance. It is based on the concept of qi (pronounced “chee”), the vital energy that flows through pathways called meridians. According to TCM, illness and pain occur when qi becomes blocked or unbalanced. By stimulating acupuncture points, practitioners aim to restore the proper flow of qi, helping to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and support overall well-being.
Modern research suggests that acupuncture may work by stimulating the nervous system, releasing endorphins (natural painkillers), improving blood circulation, and affecting neurotransmitters that regulate mood and pain perception. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, anxiety, digestive disorders, and insomnia. While acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained practitioner, it should be done with sterile needles to avoid any risk of infection.
